Empowering Your Team During Uncertainty

Empowering Your Team During Uncertainty

Dr. Faye invited me to be on her YouTube show, "Bold New Beginnings", recently, and we had such an enjoyable conversation about the important things Front-Line leaders and businesses can think about moving forward with their purpose and plan amongst the fear and uncertainty surrounding our world today.

One major question leaders can be asking is: what do you really want for your team in this new climate?

  1. Human connection. Focus on building camaraderie and familial environment amongst your team members. We are whole people coming into the workplace. We all have uncertainty and anxiety no matter where our workplace is -- whether at home or back in the brick-and-mortar office setting. Being vulnerable and supportive of one another is the key to a unified team. Find support in the value of human connection. Remind your team members that they are not alone.

  2. Vision and Empowerment. These may seem like vague, buzz words hopping around the internet, but it's important to hold those definitions as you envision the future for you, your team and your business.  Your vision is understanding how to move forward. You understand the growth within your vision, but to empower your team is to show them that there is collaboration in the vision. Let your team know they are the experts, and you want to hear what they have to say. You want suggestions and plans on how to unleash your vision into the world as a collaborative team.

  3. Be creative and innovative. It is critical as part of the team to be inventive in today's modern world. It's about "you know what would be great?" types of conversations as you're drinking coffee with a coworker to understand that you can do things differently.  A growth mindset is a curious one; be curious and open-minded to constantly learn and explore.

  4. Focus on individual development plans. Help your team to understand their own individual purposes. When an individual has the self-awareness to know where they may lack in terms of skillset, leaders can help guide by honestly sharing where you see gaps and encourage the employee to lean into where they can improve and grow. When they take their personal development into their own hands with curiosity and excitement, it helps the entire team in the long-term.

It is important as a Front-Line leader to understand emotional intelligence and how asking the right questions with curiosity, adaptability, and vulnerability can lead to greater movement toward your vision as a team.
